Awesome Con DC debuted last year around this time to a crowd of 7,000. I unfortunately did not attend to my regret and heard that it was a good con going experience. Last year Ben Penrod of Awesome Conventions LLC did a Kickstarter to raise money for the event. The perks included tickets for this year’s event and cool backer T-shirts. The Kickstarter campaign was a success as they met their goal and have great sponsors in Third Eye Comics, Yelp, Museum of Science Fiction, and Gobblebox. Now attendees are starting to see the benefits from the campaign.
In its second year Awesome Con DC has managed to snag major celebrities within the geek community. With media guests such as Billie Piper from Doctor Who, Cary Elwes from the Princess Bride, Lord of the Rings’ Sean Astin, and the Walking Dead’s Danai Gurira (Michonne) the con has stepped up their game as a major player in East Coast cons.
While the media guests are plentiful, the organizers have not slacked off when it comes to artists and writers of comics like George Perez and Rodney Ramos. For major novel readers, we have literary authors such as Gail Z Martin and Timothy Zahn who will also be attendance.
The programming offered is various from autograph signings to Super Art Fights, Tips on Voice Acting as well as Q&A’s with various TV and movie guests. There is one major difference that you should be forewarned about before attending. Unlike cons like Baltimore Comic Con and San Diego Comic Con, there are certain rooms that will be cleared out in between panels. Of course those rooms seem to feature several of the Q&As featuring the media guests. As if trying to plan your schedule wasn’t hard enough! I know I’m going to geek out about having two original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers in the same room, Walter Jones aka Zack (Black Ranger) and David Yost (Billy)!
If you are wondering if kids would benefit from attending, they will. There are several activities and panels geared toward the little ones. From panels about puppetry to several voice actors from your kids TV shows, they will have wide eyes the entire time they are there.
There will also be some evening activity going on while the Awesome DC is taking place. For example, an Awesome concert featuring Andrew W.K. will take place Saturday at the Black Cat. There is even an after-party taking place on Sunday!
Just a metro ride away if you are in the DMV area, how can you not attend?
I know I’m excited to be attending Awesome Con DC! Are you? Comment below and let me know who you are excited to see!

I really wish I could have attended this event. Unfortunately I was out in California, but it was great to stay somewhat involved and read through the posts and cosplay pictures through GobbleBox! 😀
