Free Comic Book Day!

You have plans this Saturday.  Seriously, mark your calendar as busy.  Make sure you know the location of your local comic shop because it is once again Free Comic Book Day! Feel free to cheer, fist pump, and set your automatic reminders!  The First Saturday in May is that glorious day of the year when anyone can get a free comic book, or five, just by visiting your local independent comic shop.  In it’s 12th year, Free Comic Book Day connects people to the place where superheroes were born, the pulpy pages of a low-tech comic book.

Focused on supporting independent shops, developing new readers, and thanking long time fans, this year’s free comics include a wide variety of titles. With an upcoming movie, Guardians of the Galaxy will be offered with Rocket Raccoon getting his own solo story within the book.  DC will have Futures End featuring a cast of recognizable heroes battling cyborgs in an apocalyptic future to kick off their new story event. And there will also be a big offering of kid friendly books including Sponge Bob, Teen Titans, Hello Kitty and more.  But don’t be afraid of the lesser known titles, now is the time to explore something new for free!

Many shops plan additional things like guest artists and writers, giveaways, raffles, and more.  Find your local comic shop with the store locator on the Free Comic Book Day website: http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/992 Then come back here and tell us what you got, give us reviews, and let us know who you brought with you!

So my comic store only allowed you to take one but you could go to the back of the line after and go through again. It was 90 degrees outside so needless to say I only did that once. They only had about 20 to choose from too bah.

Fcbd was awesome! But sucked you could only choose one comic and then had to go back into the line. I said to heck with that mess and went to a noodle food truck. Mmm noodles were yummy.

I stopped by 4 shops:

1st shop allowed 2 from table A plus 1 from table B…or 5 from table A. Too much math. Ha! Very large selection though. Loved their sale items and scored advanced screening passes to see Godzilla.

2nd shop allowed 1 for free or 5 with a store purchase. Very small selection though.

3rd shop allowed 5 free comics. Small selection too.

4th shop (extra small place, but had all 60 selections) Allowed up to 10. They all had to be different picks of course.

Once again highly enjoyed free comic book day. I always try to purchase something at each shop bcs even though it’s labeled “FREE” the shops pay for the books. Until next year!

So, I scored big time! I went to two shops up here in Northern Cali and got quite a few. The first shop I went to was Comics FTW- my fav local shop! They had almost all of the titles & everyone got to pick 3. The line went fast and I scored the Mouse Guard hardcover, Futures End & Guardians of the Galaxy. The advantage to going with kids is that they also got a bunch & I get to read those too! Also, they had free face painting which was a hit! There were quite a few families there and made it feel like a neighborhood summer block party (with Batman & the Ghostbusters in attendance).

Second store was Outer Planes which is more of a store dedicated to tabletop. I don’t really like going there for comics but they did let everyone pick 5 titles each. By the time we got there the choices were slim but hey, it’s free so I’m not complaining!

In all we totaled 20 different free comic books and a day full of superhero awesomeness!
