The season premiere is finally here! I was so glad we picked up where we left off from the season finale. Man I missed this show! I loved their ship Lucy (voiced by Tamsen McDonough) and Pree (Thom Allison) in this episode! On to the recap! Warning: Contains spoilers!
In La La Land
First we see Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) all determined to find D’avin (Luke MacFarlane) (I’m going to nickname him D for short) but the next thing we know the next scene shows the magic three together again. However, D’avin is really still at the facility where we saw him last season. He is going through some kind of mental exercise where he is assimilated in some scenarios. The first one he’s dreaming that Dutch and John are back with him to break back into the facility that held him. While they are breaking in Fancy Lee (Sean Baek) helps them shoot out some guards. Red Flag! Fancy isn’t known to be very helpful and friendly. And the last time we saw him he was hooked up getting some green goo into him. D’avin is starting to get suspicious that this isn’t real. While John (Aaron Ashmore) and Fancy Lee are “attempting” to break through a door with sparks flying D’avin kisses Dutch.
When the lab techs are checking his progress, D is humming. One of the lab rats decides to up D’avin’s dosage of the weird greenish liquid. Kind of like the liquid Khlyen (Robe Stewart) got back from John last season. Hmmmm. The next scenario D’avin’s dreaming he’s outside, it’s nighttime and he hears some guards and the dogs coming his way. He starts running but stops when he finds this guy. The dude is scared and wants D to kill him because he can feel it starting. What’s starting? The soldiers take the guy away. As he’s being led away he wants D to tell them what’s going on. Umm I’m trying to figure out what is going on!? That green stuff is on the ground where the guy was. The soldiers seem to ignore D’avin completely. He gets a brief flash of him in the lab when he touches the green stuff. D starts walking around surrounded by stabbing, vomiting, fighting and guys running away. D is able to recognize one group as Scarbacks. In the chaos is Khlyen, who seems surprised to see him there. Apparently D’avin reached the next level a lot faster than expected. There’s some of that green goo again on the ground. The next thing we know D wakes up in his underwear laying down in the stuff. He’s able to literally repel the liquid which the lab techs have never seen before. Both D and myself are wondering out loud what the hell are they doing to him?
Level 6 has Advantages
Khlyen comes to the lab disappointed that D isn’t strong enough for the green liquid but the lab rats tell him “Nope he rejected it. He’s immune.” D then removes the needle that was in the back below the neck (ugh that had to hurt) and stabs Khlyen in his hand with it. The techs are freaking out and Khlyen calmly removes the needle curious as to why his wound doesn’t heal. Well the needle does have D’s blood on it. He then kills the techs and offers D a way of escape so he can cover their tracks. Apparently the facility Khlyen took him to isn’t his usual facility. D’avin cautiously takes him up on his offer. Khlyen explains to D he wanted him to become Level 6 (L6) so he could protect Dutch (Khlyen calls her Yale) especially since Dutch listens to D. They head to a room where there is a wide bowl of the green stuff. Khlyen puts his hands in the bowl to heal his injured hand and connect to the base system to erase all traces of D at the facility. Multi-tasking goo, ummm, okay. Level 6 is pretty much his soldiers that are loyal to him. He still wants to understand why D was able to reject the green stuff, which helps control the L6 folk but that has to wait. Methinks it has something to do with that mind control stuff that’s already in D’s brain that’s rejecting the green goo. D notices that the symbol on the ground is the same one he saw in his dream. Khlyen reveals that the dream was really a memory that is part of the process. A guard approaches them and Khlyen gets in front of D taking most of the gunfire. He heals himself. An announcement “Protocol H” is made over the intercoms. The “Black Root” are on their way. Khlyen pushes D through a door and tells him to find Yale while he handles Black Root. D leaves. Khlyen absorbs some more green goo before these special soldiers arrive. They seem honored to meet him but need to take him home. They shock him for several minutes.
The Rescue Mission
Dutch is determined to find her man. I guess her trust issues with D are on pause for the time being. Anywoo they arrive outside of this planet Arkyn. Dutch believes that they will find D on the planet. She’s worried about him since he’s been down there for five days. There is a serious beta radioactive security barrier surrounding the planet that destroyed the probe John created and made it nearly impossible for Lucy to pass through. John and Lucy had to override Dutch as she was going to get them killed. Poor Pree, who is helping them out was not expecting to die that soon! They figure that they will need to find a way past the barrier so they go to their warrant handler, Bellus Haardy (Nora McLellan). She tells them the Connaver Gang, had the needed tech to get past the barrier. The warrant is to catch the people that have the shield. John and Dutch with Pree of course are on the case. They are able to find the tech on a planet called White Sands in Eulogy, a casino city full of criminals because the gang used it as collateral before leaving. Guess who is able to give them an in? Pree! I’m with John, what did he do? There has to be a story with aliases like “Big Daddy Scrimshaw” and “Paris O’Malley!”
They buy their way into the casino with guns. While John and Pree play a couple winning some money, Dutch comes out of the crate they used for the guns. With a special contact in her eye, Dutch is able to tell what the object they are looking for and finds it behind a locked door.
Lucy creates an electrical disturbance for Dutch to bypass a locked door. What she finds though is not an object with the heat signature, but a female, who has a badass mechanical arm named Alice packing some firepower. A gunfight ensues. Dutch and the girl of course eliminating security. John and Pree manage to make it to the elevator to pick up Dutch and the mystery person. Unfortunately, the woman gets shot but they still manage to escape on Lucy and help patch her up.
The woman wakes up to find John slightly crushing on “Alice” as he admires the weapon specs. Her name is Clara (Stephanie Leonidas), a hack mod with serious modifications done on her body. She’s more droid than human since the Connaver gang won her as a bet a few years ago and took her to a factory to replace some body parts with tech. They happened to find the shield on the last trip to Arkyn and put it in Clara so it could be mobile. “Alice” was a bonus so she could guard it. Unfortunately, she couldn’t kill the gang because she gets enough bolts to take a nap if she tries to kill them with the weapon arm. John notices after examining her that the radiation that she absorbs is slowly killing her and tells Dutch. What makes it worse is that they can’t remove the shield because the Connavers rigged it to blow up if tampered with. John and Dutch are not comfortable using her to help them with the Arkyn radiation shield but Clara overhears the conversation with bionic ears. After hearing about their situation she wants to help them, especially knowing that they want to rescue John’s brother D. She at least chooses this mission instead of being forced into it.
Clara hooks herself up to Lucy to activate the stronger shield to get them through the barrier into Arkyn. Lucy seems to really like Clara after getting a compliment! Clara is in serious pain after they land but she seems to be okay for now and is even able to cloak Lucy while Dutch and John try to find D. It’s time to go rescue the man!
Reunion
Dutch and John make their way into the facility. They find Fancy Lee on the way. Lucy is able to locate D’s comm signal. They head outside where they find him. Yay! The gang’s reunited! Dutch, wanted to go search for Khylen but he lies and said he saw the man leave. It was probably a good thing D took Khylen’s advice from earlier because Dutch really didn’t have time to go search for the man.
The gang makes it onto Lucy. Just before they leave D shoots Fancy after asking him if they put the green goo in him. Pree and Dutch are wondering what the hell, but Fancy wakes up and D tells them that he’s Level 6 so he is gone. Dutch proceeds to shoot Fancy several times until he falls off the ship as it’s starting to fly away.
D wants them to test him to see if he’s also Level 6. They cut his hand, and thank goodness he doesn’t heal. Everyone catches him up to what happened at Old Town which is now a containment area after the bombing. Dutch wants them to try to find Pawter and Alvis and get them out.
Level 7?
Clara is packing up some supplies that happens to be John’s. She claims she will return them. John tries to convince her to stay with them but she wants to leave. She feels like she is more mod than human and doesn’t want to change for anyone. Since the warrant specifically states that they catch the people that have the shield they can let her go since she is not considered human by The Company’s standards. Clara claims that “Alice” has a crush on John now and he says that it’s mutual. Awww! Dutch will help her get smuggled into The Quad. As Clara leaves she offers to help them if they give her a call. Lucy has her numbers and able to pick up her signal. Lucy was just too adorable asking John if they could keep Clara.
Dutch, John, and D are gathered in the breakroom. D’avin confesses that he lied about Khlyen leaving the base. Dutch knew but felt that D and John needed her more. D’avin thinks that Khlyen is not their enemy. His theory is that Khlyen doesn’t run the Reclamation Apprehension Center (RAC), that there is another level above 6 that scares the crap out of Khlyen. He may have been protecting Dutch from someone higher. Dutch is in denial but she still feels that whatever is going on Khlyen still has his hands dirty.
D’avin reveals that he saw Dutch in Khlyen’s memory. She was killing some Scarbacks. Why? More importantly, why doesn’t Dutch remember?
Speaking of the man, we find him in a sleep pod about to get transported to “the lady” when Fancy kills a guard. He then sits by the pod.
Thoughts
What a great first episode! I loved Clara’s character. I thought she had great chemistry with John and Lucy. I’m really hoping we see her again this season. Earlier in the episode she did say she wanted to blow up the factory that modified her and Dutch was willing to offer free help. Let’s hope we see that soon.
Pree was like the MVP of this episode. We saw very little of him last season so I’m glad we got to know him a little bit better in the first episode. I’m ready to hear what crimes he committed. His one liners were awesome. The “dying’ underwear line cracked me up and rhyming when he’s nervous was too cute!
I’m really glad that they were able to rescue D’avin instead of dragging it out. The mystery that is Khlyen has gotten that much deeper so I can’t wait until more is revealed about his motives.
I’m looking forward to next week!
