This episode was creeeepy in a good way! So many thoughts in my head about what they found out in the mines! On to the recap!
Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) wakes up in a cave. John (Aaron Ashmore) is trying to reach her but the comm link has a bad connection. When Dutch wakes up she sees Khlyen (Rob Stewart). The man wants her to go back to Arkyn with him. She refuses thinking that he is going to turn her into a Level 6 (L6). He claims that she is already L6 and cuts her across the abdomen to prove it! When he does that the blood leaking out is green! WTH!?
We jump back 12 hours earlier. Turin (Patrick Garrow) gives them a search mission. A husband and wife team of Killjoys, Paolo and Tanya (Lina Roessler) with sister Deena were sent to the Northern Badlands (known as a wasteland) for a Level 2 salvage warrant. However, when they requested an evac about a week ago, Khlyen intercepted the message and covered it up. Turin wants the gang to try to find the other Killjoys alive if possible (since they were never rescued) and what the hells Khlyen is hiding up there.
They arrive at the coordinates Turin provided. Lucy (voiced by Tamsen McDonough) helps locate the ship. Doesn’t look like anybody’s home except for green moss around the inside of the ship. Dutch guesses the missing crew went somewhere else for shelter.
Everyone heads back to Lucy. Dutch asks Lucy to scan for potential shelters. Lucy tells John that she made a fascinating analysis of the soil but he wants to wait to hear it. Was it just me or did she sound a little snippy when John refused to hear her findings but call Pawter (Sarah Power) to see how she’s doing? Pawter is busy trying to save video from when Hills (Frank Moore) got shot by dick Officer Liam Jelco (Pascal Langdale). John is wondering if she is doing something dangerous. Pawter tries to change the subject. Pawter is unable to pass a DNA scan to activate a drawer in his desk. She does however find a holo-phone. I’m glad John is checking up on her though.
Dutch finds Alvis (Morgan Kelly) in the dining area without his robes. He’s been snooping in Davin’s room for a change of clothes. Alvis is depressed and thinking of leaving the Scarback faith because of what happened last week when he almost killed the folk in the Spring Hill compound. Dutch doesn’t want him to give up his faith even though she’s not even sure what she believes in.
While riding in the Jeep Davin (Luke MacFarlane) asks how long Alvis will be hanging with them. For right now they are responsible for Alvis until he finds another place. At least that’s how Dutch feels about the situation. From Davin’s tone and body language he doesn’t want to feel “responsible” for their new roomie. John listens to the conversation while he drives. He probably thought Dutch and Davin were about to argue when someone tries to shoot at them.
John shouts that they have a warrant. The shooter, who turns out to be Tanya, wonders if they are there to kill her. Dutch tries to reassure her by introduces herself and the others as RAC agents responding to Tanya’s evac request. Tanya still isn’t sure about them. Dutch asks if she knows about Khlyen. When Tanya looked confused, Dutch explains that Khlyen cancelled the rescue. She and the others lower their weapons. Dutch continues to say that Tanya may have found something they weren’t supposed to. Tanya wants to tell them but they also have to help get her sister that’s down in the mine.
The Shaft
Alvis, who used to be a miner, joins the rescue mission as they navigate the mine shafts. The first thing Davin notices are the plutonic crystals which, as John explains, absorbs light. The gang has some cool glasses where they are able to see each other’s live video. Tanya explains that the Salvage was a monk. Usually salvage warrants don’t include people. John found no record of the salvage. The Scarbacks grew up in the mines according to Alvis so the monk may be related to that. Davin didn’t realize that Alvis was a miner, making him helpful versus just being there for kicks. I feel like Davin is a little jealous of Alvis.
Tanya explains that they were emptying the Rec-U when the Black Rain came, so they had to use the mine for shelter. The crystals provided light when theirs ran out. She just casually added that her husband Paolo was trying to kill her and Deena. That’s good to know.
Pawter talks with her father about witnessing Hills death. She wants something done about Jelco. Her dad thinks she’s safer in Spring Hill for right now. Her mother, who is head of one of the nine major families, would not be able to help. Thanks for nothing Dad! Jelco walks in with some flowers just as Pawter is calling him a monster. He thinks they got off on the wrong foot. He has a proposition he wants to discuss with her during dinner. Pawter passes. Jelco warns Pawter about straying too far from the Spring Hill parameter when the camera pans to her ankle. This dude gave Pawter an ankle monitor. The nerve! He still holds the title of being the dickiest I see.
Back to the mines! Davin tries to subtly dig into Alvis’s skills as a miner since the place doesn’t seem that complicated. Alvis drops some knowledge about estimating the mine to be at least a century old. He recommends them staying close to the surface because of branching tunnels, and he was able to predict an upcoming fork in the current tunnel. Stay in your lane Davin. John explains that the crystals are sucking up whatever energy is down there which was why Lucy didn’t notice them in her initial scans. They find some more moss like the one on the ship. John reassures them that Lucy is locked up tight so they shouldn’t find any when they get back. The gang also observes the salt rock above them is unstable so they will have to be careful going through openings. Tanya continues to lead the way to the fork. It’s getting hot down there. When they get to the fork Dutch has them split up but John stays behind to watch their backs and Tanya.
Pawter tests the ankle monitor and it beeps as she gets closer to the exit. Jelco rubs it in a little bit. She doesn’t want to hear his proposition but he tells her anyway. He has a heart condition that requires frequent surgery to drain the membrane. He even shows her his beating heart. Dude, TMI! He wants her to do the surgery instead of the other doctors that are there. By helping him he will help her. Yeah, okay buddy. He seems to like the fact that because he is part of a lower class Qreshi family he gets to boss her around.
Mossipede
Alvis finds some Scarback waybacks, routes around the tunnel. So far no luck finding Deena. However, Davin does find one big hole in the ground that seems to go farther below. Tanya sees Paolo and runs off. She confronts him and he tries to warn her that the others are going to kill them. She shoots him near the right arm and he staggers off. They find her just as she’s about to run after him again. Dutch thinks Tanya will compromise the mission if she kills Paolo before they can question him. Tanya insists on staying. Just as John tries to escort her out she sees Paolo again. She knocks off a piece of wood that was holding up an opening and it starts collapsing. John is trapped on the other side closer to the exit. Just great! When the others start continuing the search we see the moss move. It’s really a centipede with a moss covering. *Shudders* I’m like nope:
Pawter decides to do the surgery. She gives Jelco an anesthetic so he’s asleep while she also knocks out the guard monitoring the surgery. She also punctured something, maybe it was the membrane, don’t know. She uses the blood that was spilled to access the information she needs to access his desk.
John goes back to the ship to get some equipment to help open up the collapsed rock so the others can escape. Lucy updates him on news that Turin was right about Red-17 being destroyed, especially after a lot of data got transferred off moon. John wants Lucy to look into it further and at the same time try to reach Pawter. Her comm link is still disabled and her stress signs spiked several seconds ago. Lucy gets sarcastic when John gets miffed that she didn’t tell him about Pawter’s vitals. It just happened John. I forgive you though because you were also in a rush to get back to the mine. He does leave a message for Pawter that they will come for her ASAP.
Lunch
Davin finds a moss like tree and some bones. Alvis explains that there were temples for worship but not that far down. Davin also notices a symbol that looks very similar. If you recall it is the same symbol that was on the floor where Khylen had bowl of green goo. According to Alvis the symbol comes from the Scarback scriptures which tell a story where 12 monks went to fight the devil and never came back. Alvis realizes that there are enough crystals to light up the Quad so that is not the reason the mine was shut down. Dutch is wondering why. We’re about to get our answer folks. Tanya calls out for Deena but she sees Paolo. He doesn’t appear injured. She shoots him again. Dutch and the others hear the shots but Dutch goes after her with Davin and Alvis following close behind. Tanya backs up and falls into another hole. Dutch finds her and tries to get reach for her. Dutch’s glasses fall off in the attempt. At the same time John comes back but the original exit is very unstable so he has to find another way to get them out.
As Dutch tries to reach for Tanya, the woman starts complaining that her legs hurt and she can’t reach up to Dutch. She cries out in pain and Dutch lights up the hole. Several moss centipedes are closing in on Tanya and crawling on her. One of them bites Dutch. Davin and Alvis finally get there to see the bugs have lunch. John, get them the hell out of there!
John found some volcanizing foam that will blow up the side wall. Hopefully Dutch and the others can survive for about 10 more minutes. Dutch wants John to do an analysis of the moss centipede. I love Davin’s term for it: mossipedes. John thinks they have a hive-like mindset, which may help them hunt. That’s probably how they got Tanya to fall into the hole. But again how? The bones that Davin found earlier must be Deena and Paolo, which means Tanya may have been hallucinating seeing Paolo earlier up until she fell into the hole. John thinks it’s psychotropic venom. The mossipedes have blocked a possible exit for Dutch and the boys. Alvis tries to read the waybacks for another route close to John.
Pawter goes back to Jelco’s office and is able to access a data jack using his blood on the DNA scan. Pawter hears John’s message from Lucy, who tries to bust her out by telling her she has a “psychological fixation.” The jack that shows the plans for the boundary walls around Old Town. However, that isn’t the only wall Jelco is planning. Every city in Westerly will be getting a boundary wall.
Dinner?
John does an autopsy on the creature. He cuts it in half and both pieces live. Dude! Davin stomps on one and guess what color the blood is? Green goo ladies and gentleman. The same L6 goo that Khylen tried to inject into Davin. That’s why Khylen was willing to sacrifice the other Killjoys, they stumbled upon his stash. Adding to the conspiracy, this was probably what drew the Scarbacks there, and we know that Khlyen did have some beef with the Scarbacks at one point. Alvis hasn’t put his two cents in yet. In Alvis’s defense, he does find the monk that started poor Tanya’s warrant in the first place.
Dutch, who is by herself, hasn’t seen Alvis when Davin asks. She does however “see” Khylen and goes after him. Khylen leads her to a point where she trips and falls into another hole with more bones.
We are back into an extended version of the beginning of the episode. It gets to the point where Dutch starts to see herself agreeing that Khylen molded her into a puppet. When Davin and the others, including John, find her she has stabbed herself. The mossipedes are descending for dinner. Alvis winds up snapping her out of it by reminding her of their conversation from earlier and to save them by making their escape. The mossipedes are starting to close in when Davin reaches his hands out. When he does the creatures start to fall back. Interesting, like when he repelled the green goo in the premiere episode. Well at least they can escape for sure now.
Back on the ship (finally), John seals up Dutch’s wound. She wants to make sure that the venom is completely out of her system by going to pick up Pawter. Lucy has been bringing her up to speed on that situation. No surprise that John brought the mossipede he cut back on the ship to do more testing. He wants to find out if Davin’s theory is solid.
Speaking of Pawter, she has her coat on like she is about to leave when Jelco, awake from the surgery wonders about his guard. He actually wants to make an alliance with her considering they are both outcasts in their own family. He considers her not killing him a weakness. As she is walking towards the door the ankle monitor starts beeping. Jelco thinks it’s her but it’s really him. She managed, using his blood, to get the monitor off and while Jelco was still out she placed it around his heart. Hah! So Pawter, taking the holophone with her proceeds to dip out of Spring Hill. As she’s walking outside she talks to John who tells her they are on their way. The comm link starts to static and someone knocks out Pawter from behind. Oh come on!
Interrupted Kiss
Alvis thanks Davin for saving him. He then visits Dutch to see how she’s doing. She wants to use her deadly skills as an advantage but Alvis disagrees. Alvis tells her that he found the monk and some words carved on strips of his skin. It finishes the story about the 12 monks. They apparently went to Arkyn to face the devil. The story finishes with one of them came back. The monk (now dead) may have been the one to come back. Davin’s vision of the Scarbacks and Khylen on Arkyn could’ve been a memory. But whose? Alvis wants to be dropped off on Leith where there is a monastery that would have more of the original scriptures. Davin is by the container with the creature. With John watching, each time his hand gets close the mossipede moves the other way. Just as Dutch is about to smooch on Alvis, Lucy interrupts with the data analysis from the info bursts that she mentioned to John earlier.
We next see Dutch waking up Turin. She wants him to find out where the data went and give her the warrant so she can go searching for the file. Turin is wondering what is with the demands all of a sudden. Dutch no longer wants to be a puppet. They will do things her way from now on.
More Thoughts
That’s the end of the episode folks! It’s all connected. Something tells me that Khylen has been living for a very long time. Is he the devil from the Scarback story? What about Dutch? Was Dutch really there for the mass murder or was it an ancestor? Who the hell kidnapped Pawter? And is she starting to have feelings for Johnny? That will be kind of awkward considering she slept with Davin last season. Also Davin is obviously jealous of Alvis and thinks Dutch has feelings for him. From the almost smooch that happened, I think he’s right. I could’ve sworn that Alvis was her first husband. I need to go back and find that out for sure. I did miss Pree in this episode. I still want to know more about his criminal past!
Until next time guys! What are your thoughts on the episode? Sound off below in the comments!
