What do you do if you don’t see your culture represented in the media you enjoy consuming? If you’re Kayden Phoenix, you create it yourself. Phoenix, a native of Boyle Heights, California, founded Phoenix Studios, a publishing company where she can put out her own Latina Superhero graphic novels. Once all the heroes – Jalisco, Santa, Loquita, Ruca, and Bandita – are introduced, they will form the team A La Brava, which is also the name of the universe Phoenix has created. The comics feature artists Eva Cabrera, an Eisner-nominated illustrator, and Amanda Julina Gonzalez, a newcomer.
Phoenix, a self-taught screenwriter, spoke with The Nerd Element after her panel premiered at San Diego Comic-Con at Home 2021. Watch along as she discusses her background, what it was like being a panelist at SDCC at Home, and what the future has in store for her growing series of superheroes, as well as representation of Latinas in comics.
